I’m listening to this beautiful, amazingly talented woman right now
listening to Fujiyama Mama to be exact ;)
everything is perfect
{now all I need is to find someone else my age that listens to this stuff…}
I like doing posts about music, so forgive me if I ramble a little about an artist who has always been one of my favourites.
Most people will know Kirsty MacColl from the wonderful Fairytale of New York, one of the best Christmas songs ever written. This is a fine thing by which to associate her as it encompasses one of the things that I love about her- the humour she brought to her music. The linked song is one of my favourite examples of this sort of thing (There’s a Guy Works Down the Chipshop Swears he’s Elvis also fits, as does 80 Year old Millionaire.) and I suppose it’s no surprise that those were the first songs of hers I ever heard, on tapes my dad had made for car trips.
She was a fantastic lyricist and singer who dabbled in everything from punk rock in the late 70s to the latin-inspired music you hear above and although she obviously won’t appeal to everyone: I love her.
It’ll be 12 years this December since she was killed, and I always love to bring her up in the hopes that maybe someone else will enjoy the wealth of amazing music she left behind.
